Where is the Best Place to Put a Water Tank?

Posted by Rod Judge on

One of the most ideal locations for your water tank is away from any paths, likely next to a fence or wall so access around the tank remains open.

The spot you choose needs to be a strong and level surface, because rainwater tanks can weigh tonnes when they're full.

Also think about the water usage, if it’s being plumbed to the residence, the location could be dictated by existing plumbing, or if the water usage will be connected to a hose for garden usage, consider accessibility and convenience.

How much space will I need?

While round water tanks are an economical option, they’re not as space efficient as the modern slimline and thin space-saving water tank designs.

If you’re limited for space, for example, we recommend choosing a slimline water tank, such as the RotoPlas 2000L which can be installed against a wall or fence and is compact and only requires space for:

  • 2175mm long x 625mm wide x 2015mm high.

You can review the dimensions of each tank before making your decision, to ensure you choose the most space efficient design with the highest capacity possible.

Also think about how much space you'll need to move bulky items such as furniture, wheelie bins and lawn mowers past if you're installing in a tight spot such as against a wall with a fence in close proximity.

Keep in mind you’ll need to allow for a concrete pad to house the tank. More on that subject next…

What should water tanks be placed on?

A solid and level surface is required for the installation of a water tank, with the strength to hold possibly several tonnes of weight.

Depending on the tank and shape and capacity, we recommend a concrete pad of at least 100mm in thickness with F62 reinforcing mesh and concrete with a compressive strength of 25MPa.

What about underground water tanks?

If you’re intending to place your tank underground, you can learn about underground poly tanks and concrete water tanks on our blog.
