rainfall-murray-darling-basin.jpgWhile much of New South Wales is currently experiencing higher than average rainfall as a result of the La Niña weather pattern, State and Federal governments in Australia continue to plan for the future of water usage, and the inevitable dry periods to come.

In 2021 the NSW Government released its first long-term water management plan¹ that roadmaps the future for water use, conservation and drought support across the State.

The strategy plans out the next 20 years of improving the security, quality and resilience of our water supply resources.

Why?

It’s easy to forget in times of plenty, how harsh the Australian environment can be. From flooding rains to scorching drought and electrical storms sparking catastrophic bushfires, we really do live in a place of high weather extremes.

The forecast and planning of water needs across NSW sees an increased demand for water supplies such as rainwater tanks for the home and a gradual decrease in the amount of rainfall we will receive over the years to come.

How

The plan identifies key actions that will help shape the conservation of our most precious resource for generations to come. They include:

  • Grey water reuse systems
  • Stormwater (rainwater tanks) harvesting systems
  • Recycling water
  • Bore water usage

The plan also covers strategy for the Murray Darling Basin and investing in technologies such as grey water and recycling water to reduce the impact of water consumption during periods of drought.

The Outcome

As well as industry guidelines and regulations surrounding water consumption, Individual households can begin to more greatly contribute to harvesting, storing and recycling water around their homes.

The incentive for homeowners to not only save money on water bills, but also have the reassurance they have an emergency water supply if required and also contribute to reducing damage from storm water runoff.
